"hospital-acquired infection" in a hospital or healthcare setting

Nosocomial refers to an infection acquired in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital or nursing home. It is derived from the Greek words "nosos" (disease) and "komeion" (hospital). 

Definition: Nosocomial infections are infections that develop in a hospitalized patient after admission and were not present or incubating at the time of admission. 

Examples:

Hospital-acquired pneumonia, Central line-associated bloodstream infection, and Surgical site infection. 

Risk Factors: 

  • Prolonged hospital stay
  • Weakened immune system
  • Invasive procedures (e.g., surgery, intubation)
  • Use of antibiotics

Prevention:

Hand hygiene, Disinfection of medical equipment, Use of personal protective equipment, and Early detection and treatment of infections. 

Note:

The term "nosocomial" is gradually being replaced by "hospital-acquired infection" in some medical contexts. However, it is still commonly used in scientific literature and research.
