There are several types of tests used to diagnose tuberculosis (TB):

1. Skin Tests:

  • Mantoux Test (PPD): A small amount of tuberculin protein purified (PPD) is injected under the skin. A reaction at the injection site indicates an infection.

2. Blood Tests:

  • Interferon-Gamma Release Assay (IGRA): These tests detect antibodies in the blood that indicate an active or latent TB infection. Examples include:
    • QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus (QFT-Plus)
    • T-SPOT.TB

3. Chest X-Ray:

  • A chest X-ray can reveal active TB disease in the lungs.

4. Sputum Tests:

  • Samples of mucus (sputum) coughed up from the lungs are examined under a microscope for TB bacteria.

5. Urine Tests:

  • Urine test: Can detect TB bacteria in the urine.

Molecular assays: Advanced tests that can detect TB DNA or RNA in samples such as blood, sputum, or urine.

The type of test used depends on factors such as the patient's symptoms, risk factors, and previous TB vaccination history. A combination of tests may be necessary for accurate diagnosis.
