Pneumonectomy is a surgical procedure in which an entire lung is removed. It is a major surgical intervention that is typically performed to treat serious lung conditions, such as: lung cancer, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, and traumatic lung injury.
Procedure
A pneumonectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision in the chest wall and separates the ribs to expose the lung. The blood vessels and bronchial tube (airway) leading to the lung are clamped and cut, and the lung is removed. The chest cavity is then closed and drained
