diaphram / mine

The medical prefix "phren/o-" has two meanings: mind or diaphragm. Its specific meaning depends on the context of the word it is attached to. For example, in terms like phrenic nerve, it refers to the diaphragm, while in older terms like phrenology (the pseudoscience linking skull shape to character) or schizophrenia (meaning "split mind"), it refers to the mind.

  • Mind: This usage is rooted in the historical belief that the diaphragm was the seat of the mind.
  • Example: Schizophrenia literally means "splitting of the mind".

Diaphragm:

This is the more common meaning in modern medicine.

  • Example: A phrenic nerve is a nerve that controls the diaphragm.
