Resuscitation is a medical term for reviving a person who has become unconscious or whose heart and breathing have stopped. The most common form is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), an emergency procedure that involves chest compressions and rescue breathing to maintain blood flow and oxygen supply. 

Types of resuscitation

Fluid resuscitation: The practice of replenishing bodily fluids, often in cases of severe blood loss or dehydration. Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation: A method of artificial respiration where air is exhaled from the rescuer's mouth into the victim's mouth. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS): Emergency medical care protocols for cardiac arrest. Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS): A training program for medical professionals on how to manage severe trauma. 

Key concepts

  • Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order: A legal medical order instructing healthcare providers not to perform resuscitation on a patient. 

Code blue: A term used in hospitals to signal that a patient requires immediate resuscitation. Defibrillation: Using an electric shock to restore a normal heart rhythm.
