Circumoral cyanosis refers to a bluish discoloration of the skin around the mouth. It occurs when there is a decrease in oxygen levels in the blood, causing the blood vessels in the area to appear blue.
Causes:
- Low oxygen levels: This can be caused by respiratory problems such as pneumonia, asthma, or COPD.
Conditions like heart defects or heart failure can reduce blood flow to the face.
Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can constrict blood vessels, leading to cyanosis.
Some medications, such as nitrates or methemoglobinemia, can cause cyanosis as a side effect.
Symptoms:
- Bluish discoloration of the skin around the mouth
May be accompanied by other symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, or confusion
