Status asthmaticus is a life-threatening medical emergency characterized by a severe and prolonged asthma attack that does not respond to usual treatments

Causes: 

  • Allergens (e.g., pollen, dust mites, pet dander)
  • Viral or bacterial infections
  • Medications (e.g., aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
  • Unknown triggers

Symptoms: 

  • Severe wheezing and shortness of breath
  • Inability to speak in complete sentences
  • Coughing up thick, frothy mucus
  • Chest tightness
  • Rapid heart rate and pulse
  • Bluish lips and fingernails
