Definition:
TEE is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses ultrasound waves to create detailed images of the heart and its structures. A small, flexible probe is inserted into the esophagus (the food pipe) to transmit the ultrasound waves.
Purpose:
TEE is used to: Evaluate heart function and structure, Detect heart defects, Assess blood flow through the heart, and Guide heart surgery or other procedures.
Procedure:
- The patient will be given a local anesthetic to numb the throat.
A small probe will be inserted into the esophagus. The doctor will move the probe to obtain images of the heart. The procedure usually takes about 20-30 minutes.
