Lymph nodes are pieces of encapsulated lymphoid tissue
• Nodes are grouped together in areas at risk for invasion by microorganisms or cancer
– Microorganisms and cancer cells enter capillaries with lymph fluid
– Lymph nodes filter the fluid to remove microorganisms and cells
– Special lymph node cells destroy the invaders
